Introduction
Noise pollution has many definitions but generally it
can be defined as any disturbing sound that has any harmful effects or impact
in the normal activities of humans or animals
(Mercola, 2015). The definition though is not just limited to harming
but also include annoying or distracting someone.
Effects of Noise Pollution
On the positive side, excessive noise can be considered
to be a source of entertainment. This is especially the case in night clubs,
music concerts e.t.c where by the louder the better. Another positive effect of
loud noise is in motivating individuals and teams. In many sports, the crowds
will cheer as loud as they can so that the teams they are supporting or
individuals can perform better.
The most common negative effect of noise pollution is
disturbance and annoyance. The disturbance can prevent as from enjoying our
sleep and in effect increase our stress levels and an increase in blood
pressure. This can also cause conflict between the person being affected and
the person that is generating the noise pollution. To add to that, noise
pollution cannot only cause temporary hearing loss but also permanent loss of
hearing. High levels of noise can lead to distraction and loss of concentration
in general which may lead to poor performance. Recent studies have also shown
that noise pollution affects animals. For example, daity cows are known to
produce less milk when exposed to loud noise and produce more when exposed to
soothing music. A study done on rodents also showed that noise pollution
affected them in their ability to produce (Curejoy
Editorial, 2017).
Conclusion
Excessive noise has both positive and negative effects
to the general welfare of Americans. However nothing is important as the
general wellbeing of individuals health. The positive effects are good for our
leisure activities but come at a risk to our health. Thus, the negative out
weigh the positive. Lets avoid noise pollution and maintain our health for our
general welfare.
