Plot Summary of the
Movie Impossible 2012
The Impossible
Plot
The impossible
is about the devastating 2004 Tsunami that rained havoc to the Pacific basin
and was ranked as one of the worst human disasters in history. The main
characters are Maria and Henry Bennett a British couple who are on holiday in
Thailand. They are accompanied by their three children; Lucas, Simon, and
Thomas (Bayona).
At the start, it is a happy family enjoying
their time at the pool before hell breaks loose. Quality family time in the
pool turns tragic when waters from hell come from nowhere. The family and other
residents are caught pants down as the first wave hits and everyone runs for
their dear life. In the midst of the confusion, the family is separated. Maria
is hit through a glass door and adding salt to injury she can see from a
distance her son Lucas barely afloat. Luckily she manages to reach Lucas, cling
to the debris of the aftermath and finds themselves in a makeshift hospital. At
the hospital, a confusion occurs, Lucas is told that his mother is dead and he
is then taken to a shelter for children with no parents. It truly heartbreaking
seeing the tsunami from an individual's point of view.
Henry and the other two boys are safe.
He places the boys in a bus full of tourists being taken to a safe place as he
ventures to look for the rest of his family. After few days without any luck,
he goes back to the bird at hand and finds out they have been taken elsewhere.
Henry meets Karl a German tourist and they work together to look for their
missing children.
They visit many hospitals and shelter without
any hope. At this point, any means of communication is scarce plus information
is hard to come by. After all the suspense, close calls, hope, courage,
sadness, pain, love, acts of humanity etc. – Henry arrives at the hospital
where Maria is. Call it luck or just coincident, but the all family is there.

Scientific Inaccuracies
Lack of a sign of a Tsunami: Few seconds
before the waters from hell struck, everything was normal. This is not
scientifically accurate as before a Tsunami occurs there are several signs that
can be detected by the naked eye. For example, there can be a roaring sound
that is made by the raging waters or ground shaking as a result of the
earthquake that caused the tsunami (American
Geosciences Institute).
Size of the waters: In the movie, one
huge wave struck the resident out of nowhere. This is not accurate as a tsunami
will be preceded by small waves.
Lucas surviving the first wave hit
without any major concussion: This is impossible in scientific terms as the
raging waters came at high speed with debris it had collected. Lucas only had
few bruises yet he met the full impact of the water.
Reaction speeds: The speed at which
the different people reacted is too fast. The tsunami hit within seconds yet
several people had time to do a lot of things which are inhuman even if they
had adrenaline. For example, Henry had the time to see the waves shout at the
boys to get out of there and even attempt to rush to them. Another case is
Lucas' reaction is extraordinary when he goes to help people or even when
hanging on to the debris.
