Gender, Deviance and Society

Gender, Deviance and Society

Labelling Perspective
Defiances might is deemed to involved to some extent a form of labeling perspective. This means that a person's identity or behavior might be influenced by how be describe, see or group them. In this perspective people and institutions with authority to label what is defiant have the control and influence to exercise control and what and who should be considered as defiant. Such people and institutions include the police, courts, schools, social workers among others. The example given is that of a psychiatrist who deems a woman as mentally ill. This can change her lifestyle, identity and behavior.
This differs with conventional point of view that looks at people as having free will to make their own decisions. A person having free will is capable of making his or her own decisions despite what others might think or say. In the labeling perspective one is influenced by what others think and say. As a result of that, one will behave to fit the description.
Social Response To Crime Committed by Different Genders
The society generally depends on culture and tradition to judge on crimes committed as opposed to the laws of the land (Law Teacher, 2013). With this in mind, some crimes such as armed robberies are expected to be committed by men as opposed to women. In other areas where prostitution is illegal, the crime is seen as being committed by women as opposed to men. In addition to that, the punishment is different. For example, a woman who has killed someone is more likely to be judged more harshly as that is seen as a male crime (ReviseSociology, 2016). In the same case, a male prostitute will be judged more harshly compared to the female gender and considered more of being lazy and looking for the easy way out.
Role of Women and Men In Criminal Justice System
As Victims of crime: In most cases, women are the victims in crime. This is because they are easy targets as they are deemed as physically weak and are most likely to have valuables with them. The most common crimes that are perpetrated against women include sexual abuses and domestic abuse. In recent years, robbery with violence has become common too. For men, they are less likely to suffer from sexual abuse even though it happens. They are however more likely to suffer from crimes such as police brutality, assault and robbery since they are more exposed in terms of their lifestyles. The society is more likely to sympathize with women who are victims of crimes as opposed to men. Women are seen as weak and people who need to be taken care of whereas men are expected to man up even after a crime. A good example is sex abuse where the man is rarely seen as a victim if the culprit is a woman.
As Defendants: Majority of the crimes committed is by men. The account for more than 80% of all the violent crimes that are committed. Such crimes include armed robbery, rape, domestic violence among others. When such crimes occur, people expect the culprit to be a man automatically. Crime can be committed by anyone and women have their own share of crimes. The most common crimes committed by women include prostitution where it is illegal, illegal drugs distribution and other torts.
